According to a Tech Republic, some companies use private investigative companies that track and gather your online presence to "safeguard" employers. The article reports about a company called Social Intelligence and here's how they are described:
"Social Intelligence searches everything you've said or posted to
Twitter, MySpace, the Internet in general, including those rants you put
on articles and blogs. This should be illegal right? Should be, but
it's not. The FTC just determined that Social Intelligence Corp. is in
compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act."
If your information is available and privacy settings are not set completely, you might find your personal life the focus in an interview rather than your true qualifications. What is slightly disturbing about this is that it is perfectly legal. So when you get some free time, double check those personal settings on Facebook or that thing you did one time with those people you met at the place, might be seen by your future employer (or your current one).
